Beximco Group launched a joint venture to offer DTH service

The DTH is here. Bangladeshi viewers can enjoy satellite television programmes through advanced ‘Direct to Home’ (DTH) technology very soon. Beximco Group, a leading Bangladeshi corporate company, announced that it will bring the service in Bangladesh with a joint venture with Russian GS Group. It has already set up a sister company - Beximco Communications Limited, to offer this cutting-edge technology.

The DTH technology allows a broadcasting company to directly beam the satellite signal to a TV set through a receiver, installed in the subscriber’s home. For DTH connection, the broadcasting company provides a set that includes a dish and a receiving set. No cable connection is required.

Beximco Group plans to launch the DTH platform at the end of 2014. It aims to reach 300,000 subscribers by the end of 2015. Vice Chairman of Beximco Group, Salman F Rahman, recently said in a press conference, “At present, Bangladesh does not have any legal DTH operator. The viewers can only choose between few cable operators and a terrestrial television channel.” “The demand for quality TV services is high and Beximco Communications Limited hopes to attract a significant number of subscribers in the country having a population of over 160 millions,” he added. Foreign Projects Director of GS Group, Sergei Dolgopolsky, also spoke in the event. He said that “The ‘head-end’ and the ‘up-link’ are to be installed in 2014, paving the way for the first DTH broadcasting services in Bangladesh.”

The network is expected to cover the entire country. The quality of signals of DTH is expected to be better than that of cable TV because its signal is not split through a cable. There is a possibility of reducing subscribers’ monthly cable bill as well since households can choose only the channels they want to watch.

About DTH:
DTH technology allows the viewers to enjoy the ultimate level of entertainment. Apart from the best audio and video quality, there are several other benefits of DTH which would make it the best option for Bangladeshi TV viewers. For instance, the DTH device can be set up anywhere in the country without being connected to any long fiber mesh. DTH has a large pool of channels and different quality (SD, HD) of channels to choose from. Another benefit of DTH is that all the channels are in digital quality, whereas the traditional cable connection can only provide analogue signals where a big number of channels are in very poor quality and hardly viewable. Viewers in addition will enjoy Dolby sound quality with DTH which is otherwise not possible with cable connection. What’s more, DTH allows viewers to choose the preferred audio output.

How it works: the service provider rents Ku-band transponders from the satellite. The data, video and audio signals are converted into digital format using an encoder. The multiplexer then mixes the signals and broadcasts them directly to the user using a DHT network. With the SD and HD TV channels, the subscribers enjoy a much clearer, better picture quality and audio excellence.

Bangladesh Supermarket Owners’ Association demands a uniform VAT rate

Bangladesh Supermarket Owners’ Association, otherwise known as BSOA requested NBR for implementing a uniform VAT rate for all retail super shops of the country. This request is made so that they can continue the business in full pace. The government applies a 4% VAT on sales of various supermarkets including Agora, Shwapno and Meena Bazar while authorities imposed a package VAT system to general shops according to their sizes and locations. Bangladesh Supermarket Owners’ Association prefers paying VAT on per square feet rate. Customers do not like to pay 4% VAT on sales because general shops pay a flat VAT rate. The BSOA demanded the government either withdraws 4% VAT or implement package VAT system. It says in its statement that otherwise this discrimination will gradually destroy this sector. In comparison with similar markets, in Indonesia, there are 14000 stores of only two chain supermarkets and 3000 are in India. Even, in Sri Lanka, there are 1000 stores while Bangladesh h
