Bangladesh is playing a role in making kids look smart in the UK


A smart as the British Children looks in their school uniforms, the shirt, tie, trousers/skirt, and to add to it the blazer. Part of this very smart look is made in Bangladesh.  A garments company in Gazipur, known as the Gooryong Fashion, has been supplying such shirts to John Lewis and True Tex, the two main uniform service providers in the United Kingdom, since 1996.

The business started exporting in the School Uniform sector when a US buyer placed an order of 10,000 pieces in 1996. The items were delivered in time and in a major way, and the company is where it is now after 16 years of business.

The chairman of Gooryong Fashion stated that; superior quality and timely shipment are the two of the essential factors that works in drawing the buyers. He also commented on the Chinese dealers as ‘The western buyers of school uniforms are coming to Bangladesh with more orders as China has become dearer for them’.

In the previous financial year the company supplied goods of approximately 8 million US Dollars, while this year the amount has raised unto 12 million US dollars; just in supplying of School Uniforms. The fabrics however has to be brought from China, the designs are provided by the buyers which factory workers replicate as T, said the chairman. The company employs over 2000 workers and expects to export of over 50 million US Dollar in the next year.

Bangladesh Supermarket Owners’ Association demands a uniform VAT rate

Bangladesh Supermarket Owners’ Association, otherwise known as BSOA requested NBR for implementing a uniform VAT rate for all retail super shops of the country. This request is made so that they can continue the business in full pace. The government applies a 4% VAT on sales of various supermarkets including Agora, Shwapno and Meena Bazar while authorities imposed a package VAT system to general shops according to their sizes and locations. Bangladesh Supermarket Owners’ Association prefers paying VAT on per square feet rate. Customers do not like to pay 4% VAT on sales because general shops pay a flat VAT rate. The BSOA demanded the government either withdraws 4% VAT or implement package VAT system. It says in its statement that otherwise this discrimination will gradually destroy this sector.
